City of Kent to close 100th Place SE for Mill Creek Canyon cleanup

Drivers will need to find alternate routes as the city of Kent will close 100th Place Southeast between Southeast 260th Street and 264th Street for construction activities related to the Mill Creek Canyon Cleanup Project.

The closure will be 24/7 from Dec. 17 through March 31, according to the city Public Works Department.

The Kent City Council in November approved a $545,000 amendment to the city’s contract with Clean Harbors Environmental Services to clean up trash and garbage in the city-owned 107-acre canyon park. Most of the trash is from homeless encampments, according to city staff.

The city’s initial contract of $80,000 didn’t go very far when work started in September, so that contract was amended with an additional $175,000 up to $255,000. It cost about $100,000 to clean up the first area mapped out by city staff, $80,000 for the second area and the third area now underway will exceed the rest of the $255,000 contract, which resulted in the need for an additional $545,000 contract, according to city staff.
