Left-handed junior Mike Toglia tossed four-plus strong innings, allowing one hit, as Gig Harbor defused Kentwood 1-0 in a state Class 4A quarterfinal playoff at Tacoma’s Heidelberg Park on Saturday.
Gig Harbor advances to play Newport of Bellevue in a state semifinals in Bellingham this Friday. The season ended for Kentwood, 21-5, the South Puget Sound League Northeast champion.
Toglia didn’t allow a hit after the third inning and finished with seven strikeouts.
Grant Sutton went 3-for-3, connecting on a home run for the game’s only run.
Chris Hastings took the loss.
Kentwood rolled in its first-round game, a 17-6 rout of Union earlier Saturday at Heidelberg.
Mike Ciancio went 3-for-3, with three runs scored and an RBI. Isaac Hegaiman went 3-for-4, with three runs scored, and Ben Wadowski had two hits and drove in two runs for Kentwood.
Jordan Jones earned the win.
