The community is providing some warmth to local struggling families.

The public donated stacks of jackets, coats, blankets, sleeping bags, gloves, hats, socks and other items during the annual Willow’s Place Hope for Families benefit and luncheon at the Golden Steer Steak ‘n’ Rib House on Thursday.

In addition, Eli Palko, a Willow’s Place board member and administrative service manager for the Muckleshoot Indian Tribal Gaming Agency, received the “Willow’s Award” for her work with and the tribe’s support for Willow’s Place.

Donations – clothing and cash – help Willow’s Place, a community and business-coordinated effort that helps feed the hungry and warms the homeless. Supplies also will go the Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission, Hope for Families and other groups.

“It’s a hand-up, not a handout,” said Cheryl Anderson, Willow’s Place board member. “We’re here to help people, especially those this time of the year. This is a great opportunity for us to help those in need.”

Willow’s Place hosts A Meal & More for the community on Thursdays. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. at Kent Lutheran Church, 336 Second Ave. S.
