The Kent Reporter Athletes of the Week for Feb. 6 are from Kentridge High School; Martino Boprey (Sr.) wrestling and LaJaya Brown (Sr.) basketball.

What do you value in your sport or about your team?

Bowprey: I love how wrestling creates strong team bonds. Our team is like family.

Brown: I value my teammates and how hard we work together through the good and not-so-good times. No matter what, I know they have my back and they know I will forever have theirs!

What have you learned from your sport that you can take with you throughout your life/future?

Bowprey: Hard work pays off.

Brown: I’ve learned that hard work pays off. You have to work for the results you want, and that nothing ever gets handed to you.

What do you do when you aren’t motivated and what helps you stay motivated?

Bowprey: My teammates help push me to work hard and stay motivated. As well as my coaches and parents.

Brown: When I’m not motivated, I usually listen to music to pick me back up.

Do you have a favorite pre-game meal?

Bowprey: Fried Rice

Brown: I do not have a favorite pre-game meal.

What advice would you give to a teammate that is struggling?

Bowprey: Wrestling is hard but it’s all mental. Work hard because you get out of it what you put into it.

Brown: The advice that I would give a struggling teammate is to slow down, keep your head up, and to control what you can.

From the sidelines:

Bowprey: Tino shows up everyday prepared to practice and compete at the highest level! He follows direction and executes to perfection what he has learned. Tino also leads by example, consistently exhibiting the traits of a leader and champion!

Brown: LaJaya has shown true leadership not just this week but throughout the whole, by being an example of what I preach as a coach. Resilience. She leads with her actions, her words, and holds herself to a standard day in and day out, leaving a great trail for those coming up behind her to follow.
