The two Rite Aid stores in Kent could be part of a nationwide closure by the company after it filed for bankruptcy with a plan to sell or close locations.
The Kent locations are on the East Hill at 10407 SE 256th St., and 20518 108th Ave. SE.
The Philadelphia-based company announced in a May 5 press release that it had filed Chapter 11 proceedings in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey. It is the second bankruptcy filing by the company in two years.
Rite Aid has 95 locations in Washington and another 35 Bartell Drug stores which are also part of the bankruptcy filing. Kent no longer has any Bartell locations. The company has more than 1,200 stores in 15 states.
No timeline for the sale or closure of stores was released by Rite Aid. The company said it has acquired $1.94 billion in new financing to keep stores open during the bankruptcy proceedings and potential sale.
“During this process, Rite Aid customers can continue to access pharmacy services and products in stores and online, including prescriptions and immunizations,” according to the news release. “In connection with the sale process and court-supervised proceedings, the company is working to facilitate a smooth transfer of customer prescriptions to other pharmacies. Rite Aid employees assisting with this process will continue to receive pay and benefits.”
