Slide show: Majestics women’s football team could bring playoff action home to Kent

Thanks in part to a big win June 6, the Seattle Majestics could be bringing some postseason action back to Kent.

The local women’s tackle-football team is now sitting at the top of the Western Conference, after pulling some big plays out last week against its rival the Portland Shockwave, winning 20-7.

Before June 6, the Majestics, who are undefeated so far this season, were sitting fourth in the conference, through the rating system used by their organization, the Independent Women’s Football League.

Team co-owner Camille Head attributed the Majestics’ rise in ranking to the June 6 win, as well as previously No. 1-ranked Los Angeles having a bye that week, and Kansas City having had a close (6-0) game that weekend.

If the Majestics can stay in first or second place after their last regular game of the season Saturday in Tucson, it could mean a division playoff game June 27 in Kent.

“It’s not 100 percent yet,” Head said, of whether Kent has a lock on postseason action. “This weekend is going to tell us everything. We definitely have to win – that’s a given – and (fifth-ranked) Sacramento has to come close to beating (second place) L.A.”

There are two rounds of division games in the Independent Women’s Football League.

A Majestics’ win Saturday means they’re in a good position for bringing that first playoff game home to French Field. The second round is the conference championship in July. And if the Majestics win that first playoff game, there’s a chance they could be bringing the conference championship home to Kent, too.

“We could possibly have two (postseason) games (in Kent),” Head said, noting that two more decisive wins could help give the Majestics an edge in ensuring the Western Conference championship happens on French Field turf.
