Volunteer opportunities: Kent nonprofits that are making an impact

Check out a list of most-needed items at the Kent Food Bank.

Kent Food Bank

Located at 515 W. Harrison St., Suite 107, Kent. Hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday and Friday; 5-6 p.m. second Wednesday of the month; 10-11 a.m. Thursdays (seniors only 55-plus). Please bring bags and/or boxes to carry groceries.

The food bank is also available Birch Creek Apartment Complex, 12961 SE 275th St. in Kent, and is open 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday.

Donations are welcome. Most-needed items include soup (condensed and ready to eat); canned vegetables; canned tomato products; canned fruit; canned proteins (SPAM, tuna, chicken); ready to eat meals (chili, Chef Boyardee); canned or bagged beans; toiletries; diapers and formula; office supplies (paper, pens, garbage bags).

Kent Youth and Family Services

Kent Youth and Family Services promotes healthy development of children, youth and families in South King County by providing professional counseling, education, and support services.

The staff of Kent Youth and Family Services has been dedicated to providing services for children and families for 50 years. These services include individual, school-based, and family counseling; substance use disorder treatment; support groups; early childhood education; youth and family support services; and youth development programming.

KentHOPE

KentHOPE is an enhanced shelter for women and children. The shelter can host up to 48 women and their children each day and night, and meet their immediate needs. KentHOPE is the front line and first point of interaction for guests walking in off the streets, interested in resources, emergency shelter and/or housing.

The shelter offers many resources to members of the South King County community, including case management, referrals and resources for housing, employment and pathways to recovery; mentoring and companionship to promote relationship-building; three healthy meals/day, clothing, laundry, personal hygiene supplies and shower facilities; computer access and mail service.

Link program offers single women and women with children a safe, temporary home while they work with case managers for retraining and job searches. The Bridge program helps single women and women with children who need a bridge to recovery from addiction, homelessness, and other trauma.

KentHOPE also works with partners in the community to find jobs and housing for guests. In nine years of operation, the nonprofit has assisted more than 760 women in finding stable, transitional or recovery housing, and more than 270 women have found jobs.

Kent Community Foundation

Since 1986, the Kent Community Foundation has served the greater Kent community through the support of cultural arts and education through grants and scholarships. To date, the charity has given more than $576,572 in grants and awarded 382 scholarships totaling $530,635 since inception.

In 2017, the foundation expanded its mission to be more encompassing and better address the elements of a healthy community through arts and culture, basic needs, education, economic opportunity, environment, health and wellness, vibrant communities and social justice.
