King County Councilmember Steffanie Fain, along with Councilmembers Jorge Barón and Pete von Reichbauer, presented a proclamation at the King County Council meeting Jan. 13 in Seattle recognizing Korean American Day and honoring the many contributions of Korean Americans across King County.
The Consul General of South Korea, and several other leaders from the Korean American community joined the council meeting to receive the proclamation, according to a Jan. 14 King County Council press release.
Fain, the first Korean American to serve on the council, also presented a similar recognition to the Consul General at an event earlier that day at a Korean American Day celebration hosted by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Seattle.
Fain, of Normandy Park, represents District 5, which includes all or some of Kent, Renton, Tukwila, SeaTac and Des Moines.
Then-Gov. Christine Gregoire signed the Korean American Day Bill in April 2007 to celebrate the vital contributions and achievements made by Washington’s Korean Americans since the first Koreans arrived here in the early 20th century. Today, 45,000 Korean Americans live in King County, making it one of the largest and most vibrant Korean American communities in the Pacific Northwest, according to the King County Council.
