Kent School Board race tightens between Hamada, Cook | Update

Hamada up by 74 votes; one school levy measure much closer as yes votes climb to 49.19%

It’s become an extremely tight race between incumbent Leslie Hamada and challenger Donald Cook for the Kent School Board.

Hamada has a narrow lead of 74 votes after the latest King County Election results posted Thursday, Nov. 9. Hamada has 49.86% (9,717 votes) while Cook has 49.48% (9,643 votes), according to King County Elections. The write-in votes are at 129.

Results will be updated each weekday by King County Elections and certified on Nov. 28.

Hamada, in her fourth year on the board, led by 304 votes on Nov. 7 and by 314 votes on Nov. 8.

School measure tightens

Proposition No. 1, the Replacement of Expiring Educational Programs and Operations Levy, is still being voted down but it’s much closer.

The measure has 50.81% (10,958) no votes and 49.19% (10,610) yes votes, a difference of 348 votes. The no votes were at 52.16% on Nov. 7 and 51.85% on Nov. 8.

Proposition No. 2, the Capital Projects and Technology Levy, has slightly changed with 53% (11,272) no votes and 47% (9,994) yes votes. The no votes were at 54.20% on Nov. 7 and 54.01% on Nov. 8.

Both levies require 50% approval by voters.

Kent City Council results

Incumbents Marli Larimer and Zandria Michaud will return to the Kent City Council after easy victories while John Boyd kept his comfortable lead over Kelly Wiggans-Crawford for the one open seat on the seven-member council and will replace Les Thomas, who is retiring after 20 years on the council.

Boyd has 57.13% of the vote compared to 42.36% for Wiggans-Crawford.
