Rain last Sunday was a welcome sight for many, but the wet weather meant crews were only able to complete half of the weather-dependent paving and striping work scheduled on Interstate 5 that weekend.
Contractor crews plan to take advantage of dry weather forecast for this weekend, Aug. 18-21, to finish where they left off.
“Our contractor will prioritize paving and restriping mainline I-5 and several ramps because these activities are the most weather-sensitive,” said Washington State Department of Transportation Engineering Manager Messay Shiferaw. “This means rescheduling some expansion-joint repairs until October but allows us to finish our weekend lane closures this year.”
Lane and ramp closures, Aug. 18- 21
To complete paving and lane striping, crews will close the right three lanes of northbound I-5 between Kent and Tukwila from 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21.
Several ramps will also close:
• State Route 516 on-ramps
• Military Road on- and off-ramps
• South 188th Street on- and off-ramps
Upcoming weekend work
The weekend work will mark the seventh of 11 weekends of lane reductions. The next four weekends of scheduled work will include bridge paving and expansion-joint replacement.
Drivers should plan ahead

Weeknight work continues
In addition to weekend-long paving and expansion-joint work on the $31 million project, crews continue their weeknight work of repairing concrete, replacing broken concrete panels, and grinding concrete to eliminate ruts at locations between South 260th Street and the Duwamish River. That work will continue through summer 2018.
