Kent Police arrested a 35-year-old Seattle man for investigation of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes after he reportedly texted a child in Kent to suggest they meet up for sexual activity.
An officer took a report in November that is a cautionary story for anyone with children, according to a Dec. 9 Kent Police Facebook post.
A parent called called 911 to report that an older man was communicating with their tween child (between ages of 8-12) inappropriately, according to police.
“The child met the man while trick or treating,” according to a police statement. “He thought she was pretty and somehow, obtained her cellphone number. They were texting back and forth for over a week, and he was suggesting they meet up to engage in sexual activity. Fortunately, the parent found the messages before they progressed further.”
According to the police statement, it seems obvious to adults not to give random strangers our phone numbers or addresses, and not to try to meet up with someone we barely know.
“But kids lack our experience and think differently,” according to police. “So, we encourage you to think of a cellphone, I-Pad, laptop and other similar devices as windows to your home that provide access to your child. You would not leave your windows open to allow just anyone to sneak inside. Don’t leave your screens unguarded either.
“Talk to your kids, check they phones frequently, and put safeguards on their devices.”
A Kent officer developed probable cause and collaborated with Seattle Police to have the man arrested. The man is facing a felony charge of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes.
