Kent Police arrested a 43-year-old Kent man for investigation of resisting arrest, a state Department of Corrections escape warrant, four counts of drug possession and possession of a stolen firearm.
The incident began at about 6:50 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 26 when officers were dispatched to a business at 200 Washington Ave. S., regarding an attempted theft from a vehicle, according to an Oct. 27 Kent Police Facebook post. The 911 caller had video of suspects in a car attempting to enter his vehicle, and he had followed the car to the business parking lot. He reported it was the same vehicle with the suspects who had just tried to break into his vehicle.
Officers arrived and noted the driver and two passengers were passed out in the car, according to police. They reportedly observed drug paraphernalia and what appeared to be a rock of fentanyl in clear view through the windows. The fentanyl was in the lap of a passenger.
Officers requested additional units to assist. Not wanting the driver to wake up and attempt to drive away, officers deflated the tires and a police vehicle parked behind the vehicle.
The driver, a 30-year-old Chehalis man, was compliant when woke, and exited the vehicle after the officer told instructed him, according to police. It was later reportedly determined he had fentanyl in his pocket, and he was booked for possession of illegal narcotics.
The 43-year-old Kent man was a passenger and not cooperative, according to police. He reportedly refused to exit the car after several commands and was making multiple furtive movements with his hands as if to grab something. He refused to exit and would not keep his hands visible.
The officers attempted to remove him from the car, but he continued to aggressively resist, according to police. As they removed him, he was still not handcuffed at this point and still trying to move his hands despite over 10 commands to stop. While he was resisting, one of the officers located a handgun in the suspect’s pocket. After a significant struggle, he was placed into handcuffs. The firearm was determined to be a 9mm that had been in stolen in August in Everett.
Officers detained a female passenger without incident. She was not arrested.
