Soroptimist International of Kent and volunteers recently teamed up at the Farrington Court Retirement Community to make dresses for young girls around the world.

Busy hands in the Dress a Girl program collect, sort, cut, iron seams and work diligently with donated fabric on sewing machines. Volunteers come to work their magic. Seamstresses come from the Kent Unity Church, the Soroptimist, Farrington Court and the community.

Donations of more than 20 yards of fabric enables volunteers to sew numerous sun dresses.

In addition, Soroptimist of Kent and Farrington Court held their first annual bra drive for the Free the Girls program earlier this year. According to Linda Simpson, Soroptimist president, the club collected 87 bras and raised more than $300 for the program, which provides job opportunities for survivors of sex trafficking.

Soroptimist International of Kent is part of an international volunteer organization working to improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world.

Soroptimist of Kent welcomes new members as it furthers its mission to help women in the community. While its focus is on women and girls, membership in the club is open to men and women.
