A Kent teen won the Masters Division of the 2011 Pokémon Trading Card Game World Championships Aug. 12-14 in San Diego.
David Cohen, 16, a student at Seattle Lutheran High School in West Seattle, won four straight matches Sunday to take the title. He had a 5-2 record earlier in the tournament to advance to the top 16.
Cohen won a $7,500 scholarship for winning the title, according to a media release from The Pokémon Company International. More than 350 players from 25 countries competed in the tournament. Cohen beat Ross Cawthon, also of the United States, in the championship match.
The championships included 16 hours of card-wielding competition. Each player has competed in more than 10 separate Play! Pokémon tournaments since the 2010-2011 season kicked-off last November. On the road to the world championships, Cohen and other players excelled at the city, state, regional and national levels.
Cohen placed second in the Senior Division of the 2009 Pokémon Trading Card Game World Championships in San Diego.
“It feels unreal, I never thought this would happen at all,” Cohen said, according to an interview on the www.pokemonworldchampionships.com website.
