Man, 42, could face vehicular assault charge in Kent crash

Federal Way man driving westbound down Smith hill when Chevy Camaro crashed into building

A 42-year-old Federal Way man may be charged with vehicular assault as Kent Police traffic investigators try to determine how a black 2013 Chevrolet Camaro crashed into a day care center along East Smith Street.

The man was driving a Camaro westbound on East Smith Street at about 1:38 a.m. July 7, according to Kent Police. He had a 43-year-old Kent woman as a passenger. Paramedics transported the man and the woman to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where they were treated for their injuries. Nobody else was injured.

“The car was reported to have been traveling westbound down the hill, by a witness,” according to a July 9 email from Kent Police Assistant Chief Jarod Kasner. “The speed was also believed to be above the posted speed limit of 40 mph when the witness observed the vehicle.”

Kasner said the exact speed of the car and how it went off the road have yet to be answered.

“The traffic investigators are examining the evidence and witness accounts to determine the sequence of events that led up to this crash,” Kasner said.

The man potentially may be charged with vehicular assault, Kasner said.

There was significant damage to the vehicle and the building, Kasner said. Firefighters had to remove the Camaro from the building.
