Mysterious Renton in-home deaths of father, two daughters ruled as starvation

Written materials about fasting were found in the home; the father’s death called a suicide.

Renton Police were called in December 2021 to an apartment on the 300 block of Factory Avenue North, where they discovered a father and two juvenile daughters all deceased in the home.

Initial reports indicated that responders were unsure as to the cause of their death because there were no signs of struggle or foul play. There was no “obvious” cause of death, according to authorities.

On June 30, the King County Medical Examiner’s Office finding was released. All three bodies were found to be “emaciated,” or thin and feeble, which are signs of malnourishment. Investigators said there was no food in the home, and written materials about fasting were also present.

With no evidence of pathogens or toxicological causes of death, the medical examiner ruled that all three died of starvation.

Due to the timing of the deaths, the father Manuel Gil’s death was ruled as a suicide, but the medical examiner ruled the manner of death for both his daughters to be “undetermined,” as their mindset and intent could not be identified.
