Dusty Imoo, a member of Team Japan hockey in the 1998 Olympics, was named Tuesday as the new goaltender coach for the Kent-based Seattle Thunderbirds.

Imoo played four seasons in the Western Hockey League with the New Westminster Bruins, Lethbridge Hurricanes and Regina Pats from 1987-91. He played 15 years professionally in the International Hockey League, East Coast Hockey League and Japan.

“Dusty has a great reputation,” T-Birds general manager Russ Farwell said in a media release. “His work ethic and character as a teammate and player and his personality is a good match to allow him to relate to developing goalies. Dusty is keen to get started as a coach and we are happy to add him to our coaching staff.”

Imoo replaces former goaltender coach Paul Fricker.

“I am excited to be a part of the T-Birds coaching staff,” said Imoo. “I hope my professional experience in net will help in the development of the T-Birds goaltending corps.”

Seattle opens a six-game preseason Sept. 2. The T-Birds play one preseason game Sept. 17 at the ShoWare Center against the Everett Silvertips. They open the regular season at home Sept. 24 against the Portland Winterhawks.
