Benefit walk raises $26,739 to fight hunger

The 25th annual Dr. Dave Turner Memorial Kent CROP Hunger Walk attracted 111 participants from eight organizations on Sunday, raising $26,739 to help end hunger.

The community-led, Church World Service-sponsored 5½-mile walk took participants through the streets of Kent and along the Green River and Interurban trails in a show of solidarity with those who walk each day long distances for food and water.

Twenty-five percent of the funds collected – a total of $6,685 – supports three local hunger organizations: the homeless men’s shelter HOME; Kent Community Supper, which serves a free supper each and every Monday night at Kent Lutheran Church; and the Kent Food Bank.

This year’s event was renamed to honor the memory of Turner, a longtime practicing physician, who, with his wife Nancy, started and coordinated the walk for its first 20 years.
