City of Kent celebrates Pride Month with flag raising

Mayor Ralph encourages people to ‘work together with mutual respect and understanding’

In what’s become an annual tradition, several Kent City Council members and residents from the community gathered at City Hall to raise the Pride flag in celebration of Pride Month.

Council members Brenda Fincher, John Boyd, Marli Larimer and Zandria Michaud joined Maria Tizoc, city Race & Equity coordinator, and other city staff and representatives from United Territories of Pacific Islanders Alliance (UTOPIA) on June 3 for the event.

Adrianna Suluai, policy director for UTOPIA, received the proclamation marking June as Pride Month in the city of Kent. UTOPIA is a queer and trans people of color-led, grassroots organization born out of the struggles, challenges, strength, and resilience of the Queer and Trans Pacific Islander (QTPI – “Q-T-pie”) communities, according to its website.

Mayor Dana Ralph read the proclamation at the June 3 council meeting.

“I think the sentence in there about finding ways that we can work together with mutual respect and understanding is hands down the most important sentence and I would really encourage everyone to take that to heart,” Ralph said after her reading.

Council President Satwinder Kaur in the June 4 council newsletter had the following message.

“As we celebrate Pride Month, let’s continue uplifting our LGBTQ+ community with love, support and inclusion,” Kaur said.
