A free Water Safety Day for families will be from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at the Kent YMCA indoor pool, 10828 SE 248th St.
The YMCA of Greater Seattle and partner No More Under, of Seattle, are on a mission to prevent drowning and promote lifesaving water skills.
According to a YMCA media release, Water Safety Day was created in 2024 with the passing of House Bill 1750 by the Washington State Legislature, also known as Yori’s Law.
“We’re so excited for Water Safety Day this year! It’s a chance for families to learn, swim, and explore job opportunities in one inspiring and accessible event,” said Chezik Tsunoda, founder of No More Under, a water safety advocate and sponsor of Yori’s Law.
This free, family-friendly event will offer fun and educational activities to help kids and families learn how to be safer in and around water, including live swim safety demonstrations, interactive games, and hands-on tips from trained aquatics staff. Attendees can also connect directly with the Y’s lifeguards and swim instructors, who will be onsite offering real-time advice and engaging with children and parents.
While supplies last, attendees can also receive a free life jacket and other swim safety related prizes.
“Too many children don’t get the chance to learn basic water safety skills — and that’s a risk we simply can’t afford to take,” said Catherine Early, YMCA Aquatics Program executive, “We’re proud to provide access, education, and lifesaving support to families in every neighborhood we serve.”
Water Safety Day is also part of a broader effort to help more kids access swim lessons by offering 50% off all Swim Basics Lessons registrations in May at YMCA of Greater Seattle locations, which includes sessions all throughout summer.

In addition to the safety activities, the Kent YMCA will also host a Summer Hiring Fair during the event, where job seekers can learn about opportunities to join the Y as a lifeguard or swim instructor, helping keep our community safe this summer and beyond.
