Chiefs topple T-Birds in overtime; Jacobs, Elliot, Alos score in 4-3 loss

The Spokane Chiefs defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-3 in overtime Saturday afternoon at the Everett Silvertips Preseason Tournament at Comcast Arena.

The T-Birds face the Everett Silvertips in their third game of the tournament on September 5, at 7 p.m.

Spokane took a 1-0 lead at 17:10 of the first period on a goal by Tyler Johnson. Levko Koper and Reid Gow had the assists on the goal.

Seattle outshot Spokane 12-9 in the first period.

Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard played the first 30 minutes of the game and made 11 saves on 12 shots. Michael Salmon came in for Pickard. Chris Sharkey started for Spokane and made 12 saves in 30 minutes of play and was replaced by Mac Engel.

The T-Birds tied the game 1-1 at 10:30 of the second period on a goal from Mitch Elliot. Brenden Dillon sent the puck from the left side up the ice to Tyler Alos streaking down the right side of the ice. Alos cut towards goal and fired a shot that rebounded to Elliot in the crease. Elliot slammed the puck past Engel for the goal.

Seattle led 21-17 in shots after two periods.

Colin Jacobs put the T-Birds in front 2-1 with a power-play goal at 3:34 of the third period. Erik Bonsor fed the puck to Jacobs in the right circle. Jacobs beat Engel with a quick shot over the glove for the go-ahead goal.

Tyler Alos gave the T-Birds a 3-1 lead at 10:21 of the third. Elliot stole the puck from a Spokane defenseman in the high slot, turned and put a shot on goal. Engel made the save but the puck rebounded to the right post. Alos pounded it home for the goal.

The Chiefs got to within one goal at 13:58 of the third on a goal from Brady Brassart. Koper and Tyler Vanscourt had the assists.

Spokane tied the game 3-3 on a power-play goal from Vanscourt. Johnson and Blake Gal had the assists.

Both teams had 27 shots on goal in regulation play.

Koper won the game at 3:29 of overtime. Gal won the puck on a face off in the Seattle zone to Koper who snapped a shot past Salmon.

Salmon finished with 19 saves on 21 shots.

Engel made 12 saves on 15 shots.

The T-Birds home opener is against the Portland Winterhawks at ShoWare Center on Saturday, Sept. 25, at 7:05 p.m.
